To start, Alan Ladd is one of my favorite actors and This Gun For Hire is one of my favorite movies. My question is in This Gun For Hire, when is he called Philip? I have watched it dozens of times trying to listen for it but its no use!! Thank you!

I don't recall him being called Philip in the movie, but there is a trailer on youtube in which the voiceover calls his character "Philip Raven".

I have scanned the novel reasonable but not exhaustively, and he does not appear to be called Phillip anywhere in it.
However, I would want to re-read the book properly to confirm this. If anyone happens to be reading or re-reading it, and wants to keep an eye out for this, that would be great. "A Gun For Sale" is a really good book. It is quite different from the film, of course, but is well worth reading.

I can only remember him being called Raven in the book, but I'll check. A good question.

Philip Raven is how the name appears on the closing credits. I would guess, although I don't know for certain, that the name came from the novel. Raven is never called by anything but the single name Raven in the movie. I think, like Shane, he should have been billed with only the one name, especially as Raven is so appropriate for the charactor.

I haven't seen this yet, but the character's name is Philip Raven, right? My guess is most people call him Raven, because I know a lot of other spy people in 40s movies went by their last names and rarely by their first e.g. marlowe, spade, mccloud, etc.
And nobody in all of Ozno wizard that there is or wasIS EVER GONNA BRING ME DOWN!!!
