As good as Casablanca in my eyes.

Better than Casablanca, and I love Casablanca. Truly one of the all-time greatest motion pictures.

I have to agree with you. I've just watched it, for the first time, and been crying throughout. I mean, besides the subtle narrative and superb acting, even the camera work/scene compositions made me want to burst out in tears!
God, this was so painfully good to watch. Interesting that a more recent favorite drama of mine , "Carol", is not only similar in tone, but actually pays homage to "Brief Encounter" very obviously, by commencing and concluding the story in the same manner (private conversation at a table interrupted by an unwelcome friend, touch on shoulder).
