Sam Goldwyn's favourite leading lady never looked lovelier than in this fine film, her breathtaking beauty enhanced even more by the lavish Technicolour production values of the period. An outstanding romantic foil her allure dominates every frame of the film in which she appears. Check out the flirtatious chemistry between her and Danny Kaye in the scene where they are cooking dinner in her apartment - never has a woman looked more stunning in a frilly apron! Virginia Mayo - I salute you!

Didnt Virginia look beautiful in the kitchen scene, driving Edwin to distraction!

I felt Virginia Mayo's performance was made secondary. Mayo did not have much to do except for the early scenes at the library and her kitchen. It was a shame since Mayo and Kayne shared great chemistry.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

Stunning, absolutely stunning! Mayo was an amazing beauty. How amazing? She made the very lovely and quite charming Vera-Ellen look rather plain by comparison in this film. That's hard to do.

I think you mean "The Princess And The Pirate". "The Pirate" is a musical staring "Gene Kelly" & "Judy Garland".

Agreed, she was very good in 'A Song is Born' - certainly a far feistier characterisation than the demure role she portrays in 'Wonder Man'. The latter film does feature an uintentionally hillarious non-P.C. line of dialogue uttered by Virginia ,which today ,must make all feminists howl with indignation. Complimenting the intellectual prowess of Danny Kaye's character, the beauteous Miss Mayo trills , 'Why if I had any brain at all I'd be a brazen hussey'!
