I read somewhere that the only reason the Marx Bros got together to make this movie was so that Chico could get some money to pay off his gambling debts to the mob. Has anyone else read about this?

Yes, this is apparantly true. Chico owed mony to a few different gangsters I think, one of the most famous stories being that Bugsy Siegel had a cheque from Chico in his wallet when he was murdered.
The story of A Night In Casablanca is that some gangsters threatened to kill Chico if he didn't pay up, so they made the movie to help him out.
