Does anyone know if Edmund Gwenn actually spoke Dutch, or did he have to learn his lines phonetically for the scene?

He speaks a perfect Dutch with a slight American accent! So does the little girl. While her Dutch is slightly better, she also has a small American accent. The song they sing, 'Sinterklaas Kapoentje', is a very popular Dutch riddle/song in the Netherlands and Belgium, where the holiday of Sinterklaas (St Nicholas) is huge and is celebrated on December 5th (in the Netherlands ) and December 6th in Belgium. Being Belgian myself, this is my favorite scene in the movie.
