Just before Earl Pfieffer accuses Mae of being a showgirl, there is a line" Ryan: When I heard Jerry was bringing someone I assumed it would be a [ ].
It sounds to me like fragment of course that is not it. I have searched online for a script but not successfully. Someone may just hear it right?

Closed captioning is a godsend for clearing up muddled or quiet dialogue.

Aha! I never thought of subtitles. Thank you. I wonder if it comes from the Odets'Play? There is a lot of 40's jargon "I never claimed a polish" but I don't recognize fright wig. Of course subtitles can be wrong?

I love this film, it has great dialogue. I listened to it several times, it sounded like 'fright wig' at first, but that sounded odd. So I thought it must be 'frightener'. However the subtitles read as follows
When Jerry said he was bringing someone to the show tonight
I thought he'd walk in with a
fright wig
.
Needless to say I was mistaken.
