<p dir="auto">This is the loudest 'quiet' movie I've ever watched.  Julie Harris was certainly effective as Frankie and the angst of a pre-teen.  But the screech! I wish she had taken it down a notch.  IMO it would have given the performance more impact.<br />
There's a difference between acting on stage and acting in film.  With a camera on you there's a nuance that can be provided that can't on stage, where projection is everything.</p>

<p dir="auto">Surprised your post hasn't started an online lynch mob, but I completely agree.  The part is incredibly shrill to begin with, but the scenery-chewing here is like nothing I've seen outside of "Lion In Winter". Wow. Just finished watching and that performance is still going off in my head like a car alarm.</p>

<p dir="auto">The veteran director should have instructed Miss Harris to "dial it down."  Her performance seems to be intended for the last row of the balcony, fine for a live theater engagement but not desirable for a film performance.  That remains one of the film's drawbacks.</p>
