Julie Harris reminded me of someone who had severe bi-polar issues and she was awful. Over the top 1950's acting that is supposed to mean something. I felt no empathy for her character nor the actress. Too Grandiose. I just wanted to push her in front of a train! It went nowhere!!!!

This is more of a literary film than shoot 'em up fare. So people who aren't used to reading literature (O'Neil, Williams, etc.) won't get it.
But I wouldn't be proud of that, if I were you. I certainly wouldn't advertise it. You've pegged yourself as an uneducated, shallow movie goer who has never had much of a thought in his head.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

Julie Harris really over-acted her part, she gave more of a stage performance than an on-screen performance. She was too loud and too animated for film.
You are so right. That's what I kept thinking while watching the movie. I hate plays with a passion and never go to them. Imagine how annoyed I was to be watching a play; a filmed play. Ugh, I hate, hate, hate, this movie.
I think a younger actress could have handled the role; maybe not a pre-teen actor but one a little older who actually looked and acted more like a child than Harris. She was a big turn-off for me as was the way the movie was presented. All that talking was way too much.
Since she came from the stage play, I can't really fault her, but Stanley Kramer, the director, should have sat her down and explained things to her.
Obviously what we see on the screen is what the director wanted. Everything about the movie was a play. The other main actors, Ethel Waters and the kid had come from Broadway too. They weren't over the top like Harris but the whole thing was not my taste.
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan.

Stanley Kramer did NOT direct this movie. Fred Zinnemann did. In fact, Zinnemann later complained that Kramer was never around on set.

Your bi-polar comment was spot on by the way, I was thinking the same thing. She ran hot & cold so often I thought she missed her medication.

Nobody I know likes this movie, but I do, as a teenager I could definitely relate to Frankie, especially when Berenice told her she was too mean to live and Frankie yells back 'I know it!' I've been there and I was older than she was and I had a mother, and I could still relate to her.
