It was a great addition to Lancaster's apporach to his character, always came across as sadistic and arrogent whenever he smiled.

Yeah. Kinda annoying. Especially as it pretty much made up all the acting Lancaster did here. He could be a good performer, but its all rather wooden macho posturing in Vera Cruz.
