(Warning: Minor Spoiler Coming Up)
In the opening of "The Feathered Doll" we see a man nervously waiting in the wax statue gallery, holding the feathered doll. He has the air of someone who has been told to meet someone in the dark gallery, but is nervous about the meeting. Later, however, we find out that he was a plainclothes cop. The question is: what was the cop doing in there? As we later discover, he suspected there was something suspicious about the doll, which was why he tried to win it at the shooting gallery. But having won it, why wouldn't he leave the carnival immediately, and take the doll back to police headquarters, or to his own home, for examination? Why would he walk into a dark gallery of wax figures and wait there? That's about the least safe place imaginable.

They don't really give you complete information to fill in all the missing pieces in the episode, but here is one possible explanation as to why the detective entered the Wax Exhibit.
As we know, he was an undercover plain-clothes detective investigating narcotics smuggling via the figurine dolls at the carnival. Suppose he had already witnessed one (or more) transactions where the transaction exchange (the money for the narcotics) was done in the exhibit. Therefore, he figured if he got the doll and brought it into the exhibit, he would then also be able to meet and arrest the buyer at the same time. Of course, he wasn't expecting to be two timed by the carnival worker who snuck up on him and knifed him.
Of course, then the obvious question would be, why would he not have backup for this type of manuever. But maybe he wanted all the glory himself.
