I might have missed it, but why did Tavernier have another gun in his car? After he killed the guy in the beginning, he left the gun in his hand.

The gun he shot his boss with belonged to the boss. He used it to make it appear to be a suicide. Tavernier has his own gun in his car. I don't know what the law was about owning guns in France in the late-50's. It may have been an army-issued one he had kept.
