It was so wonderful to see the real life couples romance blossom on screen knowing that it was also blossoming off of the screen. What a great couple. And who wouldn't have picked Ben Quick over Alan-what a mama's boy. The chemistry between the characters really showed through into the movie, making it one of my favorite Paul Newman movies.

Call me crazy but considering he was married to someone else while this romance was blossoming that kind of takes away the wonderful part for me.

yeah the backstory is precious and shows how much they still loved and adored each other so knowing he's since gone makes tha so hard to watch. cause you can't help but to wnt to protect her as she struggles to cope with his passing
"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

It was nice to see them both in the Backstory for TLHS still together and looking very happy as seniors.

Sounds like a King David situation to me. Paul Newman married joanne just one day after his divorce finalized.

their chemestry on screen is magical though the end of the film is painful for me to watch because they were expecting their first child together which she tragically later miscarried during their honeymoon but thankfully they had their three beautiful daughters later

could not agree more particularly at the end of the film as she was carrying their first child by then though that happiness gave way to heartbreak on their honeymoon when she miscarried the baby

I watched this film before I had known about Newman and Woodward's later marriage. I remember thinking "Wow! They have got to be lovers in real life"
Then my sister told me after the end "You do know they got married only months after making this movie?"
I should have known!! ; )
The chemistry is electrifying!

There's a scene in Winning where they're standing on the dock by a lake at night and she kisses him (excellent scene, speaking of chemistry). I think there's also a scene where they're in a lake in WUSA. I haven't been able to find that movie, but I've seen clips of them both wet standing in a lake. I'm pretty sure it was from WUSA.

They're at a church picnic (he spends his whole months salary on buying her picnic lunch at a church picnic) and walk to a lake. Maybe this is the movie that you're thinking of. See it!

This is one of my favorite newman movies too. He is soooo sexy in this role it mind boggling. And yes indeed their chemistry was electric.
