Who else thought that Osgood Fielding III was the highlight of this film? He not only had the funniest closing line of any film, but he had a real comedic presence that added laughs to his every scene. Even if the humor in the rest of the film seems dated, I'll always go back and watch it for Brown's scenes.

Brown worked as a circus acrobat as a child and later played semi-pro baseball. I'd put his athletic ability on a par with Buster Keaton. Look for his Warner Bros. flicks of the early 30s to see him at his best. Films like FIREMAN, SAVE MY CHILD and ELMER THE GREAT. Unfortunately, after leaving Warners, he made a lotta career missteps.

Joe E. Brown was a ripe old pro who knew he had a juicy part.
And he then proceeded to deliver one of the sweetest acting jobs
in Hollywood history. Authentically praise-worthy and truly classic
comedic acting indeed.

I've only seen Brown in bit roles (e.g. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World) apart from Some Like it Hot. Is there anything where he plays a more substantial supporting (or lead) role that you'd recommend?
One of my favorite Joe E. Brown movies is
Earthworm Tractors
. It's actually on YouTube so it must be public domain. Very funny guy!

Dear EdV:
Joe E. Brown was perfectly cast!
Have you seen his earlier films?
