instead of Tracy.
Don't get me wrong, I love Spencer Tracy and he did an amazing job in this movie, but Tracy was playing Tracy. That was how he was in real life, according to many things that I've read.
Fredric March, on the other hand, was great in his role. It was totally unlike anything he had done before (for instance, just compare him here to him in The Best Years of our Lives or The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit). The man didn't even look like himself, for goodness' sake.
Fredric March should have received an Oscar nomination.
Gene Kelly deserved a nomination too.

Especially when you consider how aligned he was with good-guy/preacher roles. AND he really let his appearance take backseat with that bald head.
I always considered this Kelly's breakaway performance that let people accept his acting over his dancing as he did some good dramatic parts prior but people would not accept them. Kinda like an actor playing a homosexual character and being typecast.
Enigmas like Tracy become less actors and more like casting directors. Aligning their names with characters to see if the match fits. Especially in dramas.
I may be twisted, but I'm not miserable.

Frederic March was great in this role! Deserved nomination, maybe even the win! Scenes with his wife were poignant.

Tracy deserved his nomination. March and Kelly deserved nominations also.

Tracy deserved a nomination for just that last scene alone. But I strongly agree with you about March - he gave one of the finest performances ever. I can't believe he didn't get some recognition for such a powerhouse performance.
Gene Kelly deserved a nomination too.
I really liked him, but he didn't stand out too much.
Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Y'know, I just remembered something rather ironic: that supposedly, Katherine Hepburn, of all people, called Fredric March the "greatest actor" there was! Wonder how Spence felt about that?

Yes - I guess it's been said that in most all of their respective roles, Tracy played Tracy while March transcended himself into the character. Love Freddie; he should have been nominated and Gene Kelly - that sure was a shock from his good-guy "Singin' In the Rain" image!
