Immediately after Cates is arrested, there is a montage of newspaper headlines ridiculing the community. Then there is a meeting of the town leaders and it opens with an actor standing and railing against the bad publicity. He has a bow tie and pronounced drawl, obviously he was Southern in origin. This guy was a fairly ubiquitous bit player in the fifties. I can't figure his name from the credits. Does anybody know who he was?

Bail was made not for Cates, but for Spencer Tracy.

The character who was most critical of the bad publicity was the banker, played by Wendell Holmes. He later on guarantees the value of the farm put up by Stebbins (Noah Berry, Jr.) as bail for Bert Cates.

Well, I know Wikipedia is not always the most creedible of sources but sometimes it just has to do. Based on the scene in question it looks like him. Even though he had a speaking role, he's listed as "uncredited".

Well that looks like him but George Dunn is not listed in the credits nor is Inherit the Wind listed as one of George Dunn's credits.

No, this guy didn't have a mustache and was not as stocky as Ray Teal. But thanks.

Could it have been the character of Jesse Dunlap played by Ray Teal?
According to his credits he actually did appear on an episode of Green Acres but I think more people might recognize him as the sheriff on Bonanza.

Not Pat Buttram, but I bet this guy was on Green Acres at one time or another.

Funnysounds like Pat Buttrum, of Green Acres fame, but, I'd doubt that it's him.
Cold sober, I find myself absolutely fascinating.
