I've heard a show business saying to the effect that when all else fails, bring in a small cute animal. That was done here, and it's overdone and forced.

The cat was played by a famous tabby named Orangey. Orangey is also the tabby who goes after Grant Williams after he shrinks down to mouse size in The Incredible Shrinking Man.

OP is too stupid to get the point of the cat in the movie. His addition wasn't gratuitous to make the audience go "awww"

The cat is an important symbol in the movie. Holly and the cat are linked. Just like the cat she is anxious and dependent and even nameless (we learn Holly is not her name). And Golightly is how a cat walks. Cats are notoriously flighty and their emotions are hot and cold. Holly puts on a cat mask at the dime store. Paul's book that interests her so much is called "9 Lives." Also, SPOILER ALERT at the end of the film she throws away the cat and as soon as she finds the cat she finds who she really is and what she wants. She originally found the cat in NYC, where she ultimately finds herself. I could go on, that's just off the top of my head. So, I don't think the cat is just put in as a distraction.

Tell that to Truman Capote who wrote the original story. He's the one who put the cat in.
