Screw that feel good sappy hollywood crap ending!
This would have made it much better -
When he tosses the ring, the cab door closes, she looks down and smiles.
Cut to a Pawn Shop where she cheerfully gets cash for the ring.
She exits the pawn shop, walks past a Chinese restaurant where the live cat is hanging in the window - she keeps walking, smiling, counting here cash.
Final scene, a Chinaman (Micky Rooney or not) chops the head off the cat.
Quick fade to BLACK
