Good points there, stevenackerman69. The fact that a good many of the cast members of the film had also played in the original Broadway stage revival of
West Side Story
, as well as in the film version also helped make this classic film the dynamic package that it is.

Here is something funny: David Winters, who played A-Rab in the film, played Baby John in the stage version. In the Krupke song, he does the female social worker in the film as A-Rab and onstage he did it as Baby John. Maybe because he did it so well on the stage, when they decided on who was going to do what in the song, they let the same actor do it.

Absolutely right! I saw WEST SIDE STORY last night on Blu-ray for the first time in more than twenty years. Not only was it as funny as I remembered but there were things I never noticed as a kid. Like when Riff is singing A-rab is pretending to be a court stenographer typing away, and when Riff gets to the part about marijuana and cross-dressing A-rab does a screamingly funny double-take and stops typing altogether!

The Jets outplayed this song with brilliant mockery. Anyone who claims they
didn't
ROFL (at least once), is lying

The verses are changed a bit between the stage and film version. And it ends with them saying Krup You! as a put on beep You! and his name Krupke.
