I thought the first twenty minutes of Dr No were really good, the middle was quite boring I thought minus a few scenes, e.g. PussFellers night club and the interactions with Leiter. Apart from the ten minute Interaction with Dr No himself I didn't care much for the ending. I felt the film was devoid of character. The following three Bond films were far more enjoyable in my opinion even though I don't think Flemming would have approved of GoldFinger in the sense that it wasn't a faithful literary adaption.

He did say he didn't like Connery but this was before they started filming Dr.No. OHMSS written in 1963 is the first Book to refer to Bond as Scottish all the previous books refer to Bond as English and then Fleming builds on the Scottish theme more in YOLT published in 1964.

Fleming eventually turned around and started to appreciate. This was probably due to his success rather than his interpretation of the role.

Well, I certainly couldn't find anything to factually back up the story of Fleming adding the Scottish heritage after Dr. No. You're the first I've heard to the contrary.

That's a huge misconception. Ian Fleming had himself a scottish heritage and he did research for Bonds background already in 1960 long before Connery came into the picture. This is not speculation its documented fact. Read the book The Making of On Her Majesty's Secret Service by Charles Helfenstein and you will see.

Bingo on all counts. Flemming giving Bond Scottish heritage was a nod to Connery for the excellent work he had done, and that's a pretty big vote of confidence from Flemming.

It's been a while since I read up on Fleming. But IIRC, he originally envisioned someone older with a more upper-middle class vibe in the role of Bond. And of course, he wanted someone English, not Scottish.
I don't know exactly when Fleming decided that Connery was a good choice, after all. But while Dr. No was being filmed (winter/spring 1962), Fleming wrote the novel On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This included a brief sidebar in which Bond's ancestry is revealed to be partly (or mostly) Scottish. This seems like Fleming's way of validating Connery in the role.
