A drunk Peter Lorre stumbling into and then taking over the "Wine Convention" is pure comedy.
The chemistry between Vincent Price and Lorre also helps make this easily the best segment of the three and that is even with the great performance from Basil Rathbone in the Valdemar segment.

Not long ago, I read a book of Poe stories, including "Amontilado". I wound up picturing Price as the murderer, but the guy who was cheating on him with his wife, I pictured as Basil Rathbone! (This would be a more serious version, of course.)

Lorre delivered a wonderful comic performance. He was definitely the highlight of the middle segment.
What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

Just watched this yesterday in what may be 30 years.
Peter Lorre is a genius - you can go back to the 1930s and Fritz Lang's M to see he had talent to burn. Unfortunately for him he was born into a body that closed out some options for him - like playing a leading man, or any sort of action roles. Still, I've never seen him give a bad performance, and I've seen a lot of his movies. Always interesting.

I just watched it last night. The funniest part for me is when Lorre simply walks up to a man on the street and says, "I want money!" Too bad Lorre couldn't have lived longer and more in Hollywood knew what to do with him.

Yea, Lorre was great. Loved the little comments he would make under his breath as he was talking to Price when he invited him over for dinner!

I agree. All three of the episodes were great but The Black Cat was great and very funny thanks to Lorre's great performance. I crack up just thinking about the wine tasting contest when he adds "It's very good."

Agree. I can watch The Black Cat over and over. He is effortlessly funny with those one liners.
