But the elf accidentally kills the one bird.
Santa's flying along in his sleigh and the elf is throwing the misfit toys out. And he gives all of them an umbrella to act as a parachute. But when he gets to the bird he looks at it and just throws it overboard without an umbrella. But in the Island of Misfit Toys scene they established that the bird couldn't fly. It swam. So the elf just threw that bird to its death.

I guess you're being facetious? I'm not certain. This used to get brought up in older threads IMDb wiped out. The bird is clearly seen flying down after the elf tosses him over. Even though it was implied he only swam. It might have something to do with the fact that NBC created that ending over a year later and Rankin/Bass forgot that the bird wasn't supposed to fly?
There were some other issues, such as the doll. I remember people didn't understand why she was a misfit toy. Just slight mistakes from editing or simply oversight by Rankin/Bass.

The bird was a toy, I thought the elf just pushed the bird into the chimney, or it just flew down by itself

I still think that episode is one of the funniest shows in TV history. ;o)
Me too! And you know what; he was right WILD turkeys CAN fly. I live in New England and we see them often. I saw a flock just after Thanksgiving this year and one of them was annoyed by the passing traffic, so it spread its wings and took off. I yelled "Look, Mr. Carlson was right!" because that was the very first thing that entered my head.

The elf was later overheard mumbling, "As God is my witness, I thought swimming birds could fly!!"
