<p dir="auto">Back then they didn't know that Mars was red.<br />
It's funny - they actually did (on the show, no less). In "Shadow of Fear", Breck calls Mars "The Red Planet" before looking in a telescope that showed a very non-red planet.<br />

<p dir="auto">Yes they did. Considering Mars is visibly red to the naked eye, it's hard to miss.<br />
