Roddenberry's participation was thought to be necessary for the fans to accept the new TV show. Roddenberry was probably more revered in those days, and seen as central to the show's concept.

Yes, and varied genetics would have been good for the Talosians plan too. But maybe in the mid-60s they couldn't be quite THAT obvious. Heck if they'd actually gone ahead and done it with ONE of them, they might have had to have the Talosians bring down a chaplain from the Enterprise to marry them!

The Talosians might have had a point about highly intelligent offspring although that's still largely random. But I'm confident that Yeoman Colt would have been a lot more FUN!
And heck, they were both there, he really didn't have to choose one or the other.
Vina wasn't really a viable prospect though, considering her actual age and physical condition.

In the original pilot episode, The Cage, she was called Number One.

She was Number Two in the original pilot. Number One and Number Two are pretty much the same thing the ship's executive officer.

Anyway the captain can apparently marry other people while in space, not sure if he can officiate for himself. But it would certainly save time if he runs into those women who won't "do it" unless they're married. Even better if he can instantly divorced them again in the morning!

Paramount did own ST, but Roddenberry was more than just an honorary consultant. He was heavily involved in the production (particularly early on) as creator, executive producer and writer. But over time his role shrank more and more.

When I was about 10, I went to a con with my parents and we actually met her.
I saw her at a con in '86 or so, in the DC area. Her session was in a small room, with about 75 people or so. TNG had just been cast, she had pics of the actors and she talked about how GR refused to work with any network, but syndication was doable.

I asked her to recite Lwuxana's title and she fired it off perfectly. I cried myself sick when she died. You're right. I love Will Riker, but she would have made a fine Number One.
