Constance Bennett had apparently just had a facelift before principle photography and this infuriated La Turner! Supposedly Lana thought Constance looked better AND younger than her!
I actually liked Lana's rough look. Went with the role.
Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

I wonder if the facelift is the reason that Constance Bennett returned to the big screen after 12 years away. I must say that she looks good for 60 in this. But then died suddenly shortly afterwards.

I love Lana Turner but I'll readily admit she didn't age well. She was in her mid 40s when she filmed Madam X but she looked ten years older before her character aged. I guess we were suppose to believe that at the beginning of the film, she was in her early 30s and aged twenty years by the end (horribly of course as her character was an alcoholic mess).
It's funny - Turner was stunning when she was in her twenties but once she hit her thirties, she always looked at least ten years older than her actual age. Once she hit her 60s, she looked amazing. At least ten to fifteen years younger than her age. Maybe it was because she finally stopped getting married and divorced!

Though I love this movie immensely, I always thought Lana Turner looked too old for the part. She looked around the same age as the mother in-law. That kind of bothered me watching the movie. It threw it off kilter. It seemed the husband and wife should have been at least ten to fifteen years younger. And then they had the nerve to have a baby!! That just did it for me!! Just sprinting around like they were "young marrieds" as Shelley Winters in Lolita would saylolol*

I loved Lana's look throughout the film, including at the end after her years of self-neglect. Such a stunning beauty in a powerful role. Constance did look a bit young to be the mother-in-law, but I didn't think she looked better just less real.

Yes, that's where the trouble started-and Constance certainly had the better figure-Lana looked plump and matronly. The color stills from the film show this all too clearly. But her performance was great, as was Bennett's.
