This smudges Bath's character for me. She had to realize that the "marry me" valentine would make
any
man aroused, so why screw with her neighbor that way? Maybe the novel has more, but she could have sent a more civil "howdy new neighbor" letter instead. She is strong, plus smart enough to know that men get a woody being around her. Seems that she takes advantage of that quality.

The servants told her that he didn't have any "passionate parts", as well as other things which showed he didn't seem to care about women, so maybe she thought he was more of an asexual type of man, and therefore would not have reacted like that.

she is a bit shallow and frivolous. i think like many attractive young women, she does not realise what strong passions she might arouse in a man.
mind you, being courted by Alan Bates, terence Stamp And Peter Finch would be enough to turn any woman's head. just thinking about it makes me slightly dizzy.
