Although listed as 2.35:1 on the packaging (which also includes a still of Jack Hawkins and Susannah York in
Jane Eyre!
), the film is actually cropped at 1.77:1. I returned my copy for a refund.

and not even a trailer either. Warner's are usually very good, I hope they reissue it.

Thanks for clearing these two issues up.
Firstly, I kept wondering where that odd still was from, close but no cigar, secondly, whilst it is irritating that this print is not 2.35:1 throughout, as it appears to be the only version available at the moment I shall hang onto it until a suitable print is released.
It's just too wonderful a film to not have!

I just bought the VHS, it comes with two tapes. It is really great. Sometimes you just have to buy the tape, there is just no other way.
But I love this film. I especially love the chemistry between Julie Christie and Alan Bates.

I was equally horrified to find that after credits in 2.35.1 (the correct aspect ratio) it went to a 1.88.1 crop. The wonderful cinematography by Nicolas Roeg deserves much better.
