When the Canadians first appear marching to Scotland the Brave, Cliff Robertson is shown marching and raising his hands all the way up to his shoulders, as are the two men behind him. However the men marching behind are all over the place. Some raise their hands to shoulder level, some barely move them, and everyone else is anywhere in between.
What is the proper way for Canadian soldiers to march?

i bet that faster pace was a requirement of the movie making - it fit the scene better if the army arrives in a reasonable time - with editing the slower pace could've shortened (sped up) the scene - but the faster march made the canadians seem dynamic & impressive
there are lots of compromises made for film

In that scene, too, they are marching far too fast. It looks like they are pacing at 140 per minute or so. Marching to bagpipes wouldn't exceed, maybe, 90 paces per minute, especially in the British/Canadian style of arms raised to shoulder height.
The only soldiers I know of that may march to bagpipes in a fast pace like that are the Brigade of Gurkhas, the special, tough soldiers from Nepal that are part of the British forces.

Thanks!
I'll chalk it up to the extras not being properly instructed.

Arms shoulder height, parallel to the ground. Always been that way.
