but on stage this was a
four-character, one-set
play! The scene with the nuns was discussed in the play but not shown - some portions of the dialog were re-assigned to scenes outside of the apartment, the character of the neighbor underwent a complete change; the scenes in the studio, the factory where Alice worked, and the Lesbian bar were the invention of screenwriter Lukas Heller, as was the notorious "seduction scene" between Coral Browne and Susannah York. Sister George became a character on a television serial rather than a radio serial. As Beryl Reid was dyslexic, one can only imagine her thoughts about the expanded script.

Beryl Reid was dyslexic? You wouldn't know it from her delivery here. Of course, it didn't take long before I forgot this was an actress reciting dialogue and started believing this was an actress bemoaning her fading glory.
I'd love to see this one stage, but I think it would become a bit too intense.

It is also a bitingly clever film and incredibly quotable. And George yelling Moo! at the endpriceless!

This movie has become quite a phenom in my circle of friends. None of us can believe that we had neither seen it nor even heard of it. Many of us appreciate Aldrich's 'Dirty Dozen' and "Baby Jane" etc
This movie needs to be unleashed to the public. A TCM broadcast with some fanfare is in order. It's time that "Sister George" found a new audience.

Would you believe I checked it out from my public library, which had it on both VHS and DVD? That's a use of public tax dollars that I completely support!

Having just seen this movie, I am anxious to read the play. I feel like going straight to Samuel French and picking up a copy.
