Can anyone tell me how this film fared in the US market? Was it well received? What did it gross? Any links to any reviews?

From what I heard it did good business in major cities on the East and West Coast like NY, California and Massachusetts but bombed everywhere else. The X rating it had didn't help. I read in an article (sorryI don't have the link) that lines were around the block in Boston MA when it played there.
It was well-received by most critics but a lot had trouble with the seduction scene (which wasn't in the play). I think when it was reissued in 1972 with an R rating it was more popular.
