Another poster was right to note the movie's obvious references to the Boston Strangler. The film was released the year after DiSalvo was sentenced to life in prison and the same year as the Tony Curtis/Henry Fonda movie "The Boston Strangler." One odd coincidence I noticed was that Murray Hamilton (the immortal mayor in "Jaws") played a cop in both movies.
