In 1971 I was in NYC with a friend for my 21st birthday. I took my birthday loot & treated us to a night at the Plaza Hotel (we had been staying with relatives). The room was $60 & it was beautiful (the bathroom was all marble & huge). And I paid in cash - no credit card needed.
"I bet you write wonderful letters."

I doubt if Clifton ever boned ANY woman's kipper.

It's a line uttered by Clifton Webb to Audrey Dalton in TITANIC (1953). She's his daughter and a steward has just delivered breakfast to their stateroom the morning of April 14, 1912.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

"May I bone your kipper, mademoiselle?"
That reminds me of:
Shoe salesman: Ma'am could I interest you in a casual pump?
Woman: Sure, I got time to look at shoes later.

When I came to Manhattan to work in Sept. 1985, there was a seedy hotel catering to tourists and hookers down the street from my company in Times Square. Single rooms were $40 a day, double rooms were $50.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

I can remember from this period that the chain Motel 6 was actually called that because they had clean modern rooms for $6 a night - and that was for two! LONG time ago.

According to the inflation calculator:
What cost $30 in 2010 would cost $4.84 in 1968.
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 1968 and 2010,
they would cost you $30 and $190.65 respectively.
So it does make sense.

Too true but I guess seedy is seedy no matter where it is located.

Yeah, in today's money it would be more like $30, but that's still very cheap compared to what you could get in Manhattan today. That's more like what a seedy hotel would cost in Iowa

Yeah it was a bit on the seedy side and you have to remember this was 43 years ago.
