Let's face it, the role of Joe Buck may look easy to play, but he's so simple and naive than most actors would play him "cornier"
Voight has that puppy-dog innocence inside of him which the performance so heart-felt, genuine and memorable
Even larks and katydids are, supposed by some, to dream

Voight brought a sweetly naïve vulnerability to the character of Joe Buck that makes the guy a highly moving and engaging protagonist.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

Yes, his naive vulnerability lit up the screen. My favorite movie of all time!

I was remarking to a friend that Jon Voight blows my mind in this. I've seen it a million times and I cannot take my eyes off him. His vulnerability and his expressions are right on at every moment. Just spectacular.
