Could this film be a good candidate for a re-make ?
If you think so, who would be the best to direct it ? If YOU could re-make it, what would you change (if anything) ? How would you go about it stylistically ? Would you modernise it ? Go with a campy, grindhouse look ? Artsy/experimental ?

No. Now go stand in the corner until I tell you otherwise.
There are 8.2 billion people in the world. 8.19 billion of them have never heard of and don't give a fuck about Charlie Kirk. Get over it.

The woods (2006) is already an unofficial remake.

it's funny, i just saw this for the first time, and the entire time that i was watching it, i was thinking about what would be the best way to remake it. the quality of the print and dubbing are just terrible, so it was very difficult to watch, but this movie has great bones that i think would make for a great remake.
i think any remake should keep it as a period piece set in the 19th century. (anything set in modern times would just ruin it.) expand on the incest, torture, and lesbianism angles (make them a tad more obvious), keep the gothic set design, and just make the script more coherent. show more of the creepy relationship between the principal and her son and give him more of a reason to do what he did. all of that with better production values, and i think you've got a winner.
will someone tell that mime to shut up?

The movie " MAY " from 2002 seemed like a sort of remake to this film with a very similar storyline ( but with a few differences of course - maybe a homage to this film ? ) but not exactly sure if it was a remake or not . Thanks KatharynRKing for your subject post .

Actually, I have to re-think this. There actually WAS a remake of this fine film- albeit a loose one. It's English title is "Pieces".
It was a total garbage movie, and any future remake would likely be the same- stealing only the shock ending without picking up on the bigger issues of sexual repression, dictatorship, etc.

Personally, should it ever be remade I'd want someone akin to Guillermo del Toro. Employing the same kind of moods set in Devil's Backbone, his mix of innocence and brutality in Pan's Labyrinth, his care for characters, the depth of his set designs etc. I'd be first in line to see his take on House That Screamed

As a director myself, I would likely go with a more surrealistic approach to this, rather than a body count-jacking slasher, as you suggest, len. And as for casting, I would try and get Julia Ormond to play Madame Fourneau. XD
Thanks for your input !

Given the quality of horror remakes we've seen the last few years, it would probably be better NOT to remake this virtually unknown classic. A remake would likely end up artificially jacking up the body count and toning down the themes of incest, torture and lesbianism.
However, if it were to be remade, I would choose David Lynch to give it a surreal edge.
