I remember watching this film on tv in the 80's ; my elderly mother was horrified watching the execution scene, as if it had recently happened.
My late mother was a Royalist and believed in the divine right of Monarchy, hence you can well imagine her opinion of OC and his followers.
Even today, I believe his statue's position outside Westminster Hall is, shall we say, misplaced and should be moved to a less prominent position.

I am not a historian but I am English. I would just like to point out that this film is not as historically accurate as some might think. If you take a look at the 'goofs' section for it then you will see some dates for events and such are in accurate, therefore skewing peoples understanding of history through movies.

"His corpse was dug up and hung from a yard iron, that's how much they loved him."
Yes. I'll present my personal opinion and impressions about this which I don't claim is perfectly accurate.

Public opinion (as represented by Parliament) went strongly against the Cromwell regime soon after his death.

This is why with Parliament's blessing, Cromwell's body was dug up and mutilated.
After all, Cromwell became a dictator (backed by the army, while he obsessed on religion). He never fully accepted a Parliamentary system having dissolved the Rump Parliament and the First Protectorate Parliament.

Because Cromwell did not fully accept a Parliament, he was never able to over see the creation of a constitution to replace the current English system.

So, he was a man who set himself above the written law. He became the law.

So, why is Cromwell popular among certain English nationalists? Imo it is due to Cromwell being a "winner" in terms of extreme English nationalism.

From an extreme POV, Cromwell crushed the Scots and the Irish and that is considered "good" by certain extremists.

From a broader nationalist perspective (for instance from Churchil), Cromwell had a lot of victories and brought glory to England.

In some ways Cromwell is to England what Napoleon is to France.

Both came to power during civil war and internal chaos.

Both had many victories on the battlefield.

Both were part of the overthrow of the monarchy.

Both became tyrants.
And both are revered by many nationalists in their respective countries.
(Though Napoleon obviously has a much greater place of honor in France compared with Cromwell in England.)

Anyway, that's just my personal POV. No offense was intended.
it's just in my opinion - imo -
