<p dir="auto">How "Irish" would the defenders of Drogheda have been? I seem to recall hearing that Drogheda was an English Planter town, and Cromwell attacked it for being a hold-out Royalist stronghold, rather than for being a town full of Irish rebels.</p>

<p dir="auto">You heard right - the garrison of Drogheda was almost entirely composed of English Royalists.  It had to be taken, because otherwise Cromwell would have had a subtantial Royalist force threatening his rear.</p>
