I watched this on several occasions albeit a long time ago and it seemed to be a seminal film packed with social and political commentary. Why the f^(k it's not being analysed and discussed by educated film buffs at length here or somewhere else?

Exactly. I do not get how movies like The Big Lebowski can play over and over again, year after year, as midnight movies, while great movies like this one, and Phantom Of The Paradise rarely even get shown, let alone get a chance at the huge midnight circuit that has developed. There are so many great wacky interesting movies that could be finding new audiences, yet we get Alien, Jurassic Park, The Big Lebowski, and The Room. Even when they play good movies for midnights they over play them, week after week. I just don't get it, but then again, I am not the kind of person that sees the same movie over and over.

Because for very raved about cult film there are 10 being ignored that people missed. You are 100% right that this should be discussed and analyzed and shown in classes. It should also be on the midnight circuit as well. Why this isn't happening pisses me off, especially when I see Jurassic Park as a midnight movie playing every couple months now.

HI, MOM! is a great, angry film, and one of the most individualistic movies of its time (which is obviously saying a lot). GREETINGS (this film's predecessor) is great too, but HI, MOM! is superior in every way, and is one of De Palma's greatest achievements, I say. A shame that it's not well known, but then again it's speaking to a very small audience anyway (those who are fed up with war, racism and conventionality, but who also possess a fascination with voyeurism and who have a rather dark sense of humor).

I had a hard time getting through it, myself. Maybe a large part of that is that I did not appreciate many of the allusions (eg to Brecht, Godard, cinema verite).
It just seemed dull and pointless.
If it hadn't been for the star power of De Niro and De Palma, and my assumption that there must be more to the plot that would eventually develop by the end, I wouldn't have even finished watching the whole film.
