I picked up a really nice Hungarian release of the Warner Brothers DVD recently.
It's in 2.40:1 aspect ratio (16:9 enhanced / letterboxed), and looks great
The audio has the original English track as well as several dub options.
There are 18 different subtitle tracks to choose from, or subtitles can be off.
They'll hang you as sure as 10 dimes will buy a dollar

I had ordered it because of the "16:9" statement, but now they corrected it to "4:3". Unfortunately, "4:3" is true. The customer reviews on amazon.de are overwhelmingly negative because of this. Also, it's a 107 minute version, apparently edited.
Don't remember too much from when I last saw the movie in the eighties, so I can't say what has been cut.
Time for your first Blu-ray, criterion! (one can only dream)

Amazon.de's information is definitely wrong.
The backcover states 4:3 and the transfer is neither letterboxed 2.35 (well, the opening credits are) nor open matte (which is impossible for an anamorphically lensed scope film anyway), but pan & scanned to 1.33. I've watched a couple of scenes and it's painful. My copy's going back tomorrow, due misleading advertising.

With regards to the Russian DVD, I've tracked it down on this website: http://www.dvdigitall.com/
However, not too much information, other than Region 0, PAL, Fullscreen ratio 1,33:1, soundtrack in Dolby 2.0 in English & Russian, subtitles: Russian and as stated 110 minute version, with filmography included.
There's also a Antonioni 3 disc box set which includes ZP, Blow up and Red Desert in the "Film Prestige" series (also avalible seperately).
Shame it's not a widescreen ratio.
pyenot-1, what's the quality like of this DVD, would it satisfy the needs of those who wish to see the film, do you recommend? I'm tempted, but should we hang on for a proper widescreen, digitally remastered version, credited to MGM etc.?
Be nice if Criterion could get the licence to release!

I hunted this film for ages on DVD but finally found a Russian copy for sale on eBay. The only English on the box says "Film Prestige, blue series". It plays on my computer just fine, says it's region-free, although all the defaults are in Russian so you have to play around a bit to get the English dialogue back. It is a 110 minute version. I watched it the other day, after several years, and was entranced againit only goes to make it more poignant when I find out that Antonioni died today. Always preferred this film to 'Blow Up', possibly because of its sparsenessbut my God, isn't it prescient with regards to capitalism et al

I have to disagree with you a bit. Alot of people who DON'T like Zabriskie Point don't like Antonioni films anyway. Pink Floyd fans look at the movie for the music and often remain completely puzzled by the film. Because it was made in America but still in his art film style (unlike Blowup which is much more conventional in the acting and plot) it will be harder to connect with for those who are expected a normal American style film.
As far as his worst films - the last two are surely that. As with other directors like Bresson and Angelopoulos the last films seem to lack inspiration.

well since the passenger is being rereleased, why not zabriskie point? well even thought neither is as big as his earlier italian films or blowup, the passenger while just as underseen and underappreciated as zabriskie point, that film still is in better standing then zabriskie since it came out. it's considered a good film just noone saw it. a lot of people hate zabriskie point. it's considered his worst film (though i think that film he did with wim wenders was worse) so there's a lot of negative stuff attached to that film could have to do with why it's not been released.

Actually, at a recent re-release screening of "The Passenger" at the Academy, Jack said that he kept it out of circulation because he didn't want it to become overplayed and just another forgotten part of pop culture. OR something to that effect. Anyway, you can look for "The Passenger" to get a wide release and a DVD later this year.
As to Zabriskie Point, I can't tell you when or why because I don't know.
