It was a well kept secret return Hudson was gay until later in life. I imagine if more people knew, it would have been public years earlier. I don't think she knew at the time and I also found the TV relationship as loving and respect of Sallys help with detecting

Not that I am an expert on all things McMillan, and certainly haven't seen all interviews. However, the ones I have seen, she always speaks so well of him. In one interview she even says she misses him. In the one interview I am thinking about, and I wish I had a video of it for reference, she said he was very private and she didn't know he was gay at first, and it was a shock when she found out, as they had a bit of chemistry.

I seem to remember that Hudson had a problem with Saint James being over 20 years younger than he was and she was reportedly repulsed having to kiss him knowing he was gay. Their mutual dislike was well well known, but apparently less well known is that they pretty much made up by the time the show ended and became fairly good (if not exactly close) friends.
