What is the contraption that Christie hooks up to the gas main in order to, he says, filter out the carbon monoxide? What is that white liquid the gas bubbles through?

The Contraption was basically a homemade hookah, or water-pipe.

I don't know what the "contraption" was called, but he hooked a rubber tube to the gas tap, then ran the tube through Friar's Balsam to disguise the smell. Breathing the gas would cause them to pass out, and he then raped and strangled them.
