I guess I'll know not to use "jeremy3" as a barometer of what movies to see. One of the strengths of Get Carter is that Jack Carter remains a thug as he looks into his brother's death. He doesn't somehow become a detective or even a "good guy." I have no respect for people with a childish need for "likable" characters.

I love this film. Jack Carter is meant to be more of an anti-hero than a hero. I loved that Carter got more ruthless and savage the further he went with exacting revenge on everyone he felt was responsible for his brother's death.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

I love the locations, the decay captured and the utter bleakness of it all.

I wouldn't say worst ever, but I want really impressed by the story in general. I thought the acting was good, and I've always liked Ian Hendry. I guess I didn't like the fact he was unlikable, much the same reason I really didn't care for Raging Bull.

I'm watching it now, for the first time, and am half-way through.
I must say, I'm massively disappointed and even rather bored. Caine is fascinating to watch, no matter what, but so far the character Carter is not just unlikeable, he's also about as menacing as my kid sister. It's just a bunch of talking.
Based on all the reviews, I assume this flick is about to take off, and the second half is where everything happens, but that doesn't excuse a mind-numbingly lackluster first hour.
I actually liked the Stallone version. It had flaws, but the character was firmly established very early on, and the rollercoaster ride started soon afterwards. Also, Stallone's Carter had a good dose of humanity in him, which definitely works for this plot.

Shaft! Really? Aside from the title song and title sequence it is largely talky and dull like a TV detective show. Get Carter is decidedly hard-edged, cool and hip 70s style. Not as good as some reviews indicated and it's not as good as Point Blank in which Lee Marvin's character is tracking down a man named Carter.

So there was I, coming here to check how many awards this magnificent film had won, and I see "one of the worst films I have ever seen. What an eyesore."
I might be tempted to assume that all the Academy members that year were as dim as the OP, were it not for the fact that, even at the BAFTAs, only Ian Hendry was nominated (as Best Supporting Actor) and he didn't win either! In the UK it did well at the box office, though most film critics weren't ready for its violence and open depiction of an amoral killer and his methods. In the USA, critics generally liked it but the film suffered from lack of promotion; MGM had major money troubles (down-sizing, selling off props, including Dorothy's ruby slippers, and backlots for real estate development; 1971 was also the year in which they planned to merge with 20th Century Fox) and in any event were already re-making "Get Carter" as blaxpoitation movie "Hit Man" (see http://www.imdb.com/board/10068704/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_2 ) so the UK film was pretty much confined to drive-ins. So much for the 1972 Oscars
Oh, and Roy Budd's score was stunning!

Many professional critics consider the original "Get Carter" as the best British film of all time. Leave it to the uncultured rabble from across the pond to bemoan what a terrible viewing experience it is.
