Let's have a serious discussion here. Pakula is no dummy, there's a lot here going on than just the simple plot. We can digress.
But my first question is why is the movie called Klute, the movie is really about Bree (the murder mystery thing is just a framework). The best answer seems to be the movie is called "Klute" because he is a straight forward representation of the kind of person Bree always thought she'd be, instead of the master manipulator she really is.

The simple and primitive title of this great movie is a bit of a mystery to me too. Before watching it we don't even know what Klute means - is this some slang word or a name? But then again, some standard thriller title (e.g. Still of the Night, Stranger Calls, Alone in the Dark) would not have been any better.
