Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Nigel Davenport did it as it was a chance for him to shine in a meaty leading man role that he didn't often get, but it seems like a role that would have been perfect for Connery at around that time (plus it would have seen him share the screen with Dalton, another Bond!)

''Why would that stop them? Connery isn't Irish, either.''
He is Irish-Scottish, hence his name - Connery. I am not seriously suggesting that he is not a Scotsman. His maternal grandparents came over in the 19th century, his grandfather as a ''Navvy''. His maternal side originate on the Isle of Skye and are Scottish Gaelic, a group closer to the Irish linguistically and culturally than they are to the mostly-English lowlanders.
OK, so that explains my joke.

Strange thread because I thought during the film that Davenport bore quite a strong resemblance to Connery. Not just the accent - which to these English ears sounded pretty good - but also facially.

Bothwell wasn't an Irish navvy type, so I doubt they would have asked Connery to play him!

I think he was sexier and more virile in this than in anything I've ever seen Connery do (and that's saying quite a lot.) Davenport was also the very epitome of the lusty Renaissance male. I will be forever grateful that Connery wasn't cast in his place.

Davenport might've gotten more leads, but he let his weight go.
Connery, in '72, might've been wished for, but I doubt anyone offered him the role.
