I've added a "first lines" quote. But I can't make out the first words, which I'm pretty sure are in French. It's the words screamed by King Francis when he gets a sudden excruciating pain in his head. I've entered it as "mon tte", because he then says "my head", but I'm almost certain that's wrong. It sounds like "mon tirche" or "mon kirche", but even after thumbing through my French-English dictionary, I can't find any French word which remotely resembles the sound I'm hearing.
If anyone can figure it out, please post it and I'll fix the quote.
Thanks,
Edward

Thanks! Sounds better than anything I came up with it. I don't have it available to listen to now, but that definitely explains the final consonant that I was hearing.
I've submitted a correction to the quote, which should appear in a few days. Clearly neither of us thinks it's absolutely certain, but it seems like a good bet. (I had never even fixed the grammar in what I submitted last year.)
Thanks again,
Edward

You guys raised my curiosity, so I had to go back and listen a bunch of times and use an online dictionary to look up a few guesses. My current conclusion is "La Vierge", which is an exclamation for the Virgin Mary. This would particularly fit with the Catholic theme in the movie.

Expecting one language and getting another definitely increases the difficulty.
(I had to look up your reference to "nul point" not part of my world.
Found it though.)

I'm used to "slurring English", no problem there. It's when the words are slurred in another language that I have trouble. Years ago it took me hours, and many repeats, to find out that an English actor I won't name was saying "nul point" (as in Eurovision)!

Si tu ne me crois pas, que puis-je faire?!
Alors, tu ne peux rien faire.
I've listened again and can't really make it out.
OK, thanks. That makes a strong argument for changing it to "[unintelligible]", much stronger than my inability to make it out. Perhaps it really is just a scream of pain with the general sound of speech. I too considered "mon Dieu", but there is a terminal sound, like a "ch", which doesn't fit.
Besides, it was said by an English-speaking person - it's hard to tell.
Yeah, we slur our words pretty badly even in our own language
Thanks again,
Well, it should be "ma tte" - grammatically correct. But I've listened again and can't really make it out. It could be "mon Dieu!" or even "Oh, deus!" (in Latin). Given that Franois died of an abscess in the brain, any interjection could be plausible.

Thanks. You wouldn't think I studied French back about the time Liz and Mary were duking it out.
But are you saying you listened and understood those to be the words, or were you simply (and justifiably) correcting my grammar? Mind you, my grammar died a long time ago and she never liked being corrected.
Because it doesn't sound like "ma tte" to me any more than it sounds like "mon tte". My French isn't great, but I follow the other snippets of French with no trouble, and it sounds quite normal, albeit perhaps 20th century well, no surprise, since the English is 20th century too.

It's "ma tte". Head is feminine in French.
Happy to oblige.
