Liquid Sky (1982) is supposed to be a "new wave sci-fi heroin film" or something of that nature. It's about drug addicts in NYC in the early 80s …and space aliens. I've never seen it.
According to Wikipedia: "The film is seen as heavily influencing a club scene that emerged in the early 2000s in Brooklyn, Berlin, Paris, and London called electroclash.[4]"

Clean and Sober starring Michael Keaton in one of his best-ever meaty straight dramatic roles.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

well if you are looking for hard drug addiction movies try TRAINSPOTTING. or REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. no sugarcoating in either. THE LOST WEEKEND and THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES are older but excellent films and deal with alcoholism, and are very realistic portrayals of that, how it affects not only the addict but everyone close to them.
