From what I remember, the mother is making dinner at the beginning of the movie. We don't see here again. I guess it can be argued that she was not important to the movie. Just curious.

Nah, men who kill their children and themselves do so because either the wife has been unfaithful or is leaving him and taking the kids. Either way the wife is invariably left alive to endure her "punishment".
