I first learned of this series a few minutes ago when I read the news about the remake, so I'm as "noob" as one can be regarding this show; so I hope you bear with me when I ask what may be a dumb question: What's the significance of the show's title?

IN essence the point was that some people do have quite terrible children, even if it's not their fault - I think that's what it means, do watch the show it's great especially the first time.

The producers had trouble coming up w/ a name for the show. The writer originally called the show "Have a Break, Take a Husband", which ended up being the name of one of the episodes in the first season.
I can look it up how they got the eventual title, but I think the mention of mother refers to Frank being doomed genetically, as he was just like his mother!
"No one don't like the Spencers. You just stay out of their way!" as Betty's mother once put it (in the pilot episode).
