Film titles say "Written by Donald E. Westlake," with no mention of a novel. There is a Westlake book with this title, but it was based on the film script, not vice versa, I think.

No, the book was first, and is a little different. They go into the charaters minds, and the mafioso is not called Patsy O'Neil.
