How did the kidnappers know that the boys would be going to the old airfield on their exeat? They must have known when and where they would be as they had gone to the trouble of hiring men, uniforms and vehicles.

Not just that - why did they even need to bother hiring the vehicles and uniforms? They could have just driven up in an ordinary car and grabbed them
