Just seen this for the first time - a pristine print in HD. Long shots of the devastated city aside - the effects were really groovy.
Remember 1974 was pre CGI effects so everything had to be done by making physical models or destroying real buildings.
I found it enjoyable at its own level and nearly wept when a host of Hollywood stars were swept to their deaths down what amounted to a giant John - and some of the lesser actors hadn't even been billed.
What a horrible way to die.

All those mondo destructo set pieces made be pitch a huge tentpole in my pants and eventually made me blow a generous load in said pants as well.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

Towering Inferno - great film. I saw it in french in 1975 and couldn't understand everything they were saying - but seeing Hollywood stars being physically roasted instead of in the literal sense by critics was great fun.
Ps You haven't lived until you hear Steve McQueen poorly dubbed into french. Robert Vaughn's voice was unspeakable.
