It's kind of a python trademark. Can't come up with a proper punchline? "and now for something completely different."

This movie is pure and simply excelent, but the ending is completely copied from Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain (1973).
As in Monty Python and The Holy Grail, The Holy Mountain is about a ultimate search.
And the ultimate truth is that "this is a movie, what do you expect?"
Did you get it now?

The only thing to understand is that it is intentionally the opposite of what you're expecting despite the random modern cops earlier on.

While i don't like the ending, it was a joke that had been expected. I wish they had done the joke, then after Arthur escaped custody, continued the story to it's conclusion.
Its ridiculous to critique a movie with the argument 'it's not real, so it doesn't matter'

Not sure there's any larger point beyond being totally absurd. Allegedly, it took the Pythons a long time to come up with an ending they could all agree upon.
